Spokesman on Economic & Monetary Affairs
Jonathan's Experience
Jonathan was first elected MEP for Wales in 1999. He was Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament from 2001-2004.
He is the Conservative Spokesman on the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and
President of the EP Delegation for relations with the USA.
He was Chief Conservative Party Spokesman for Wales, 1997-98; Member of Parliament, Brecon & Radnor, 1992-97; PPS to Minister of State, Northern Ireland, 1992-94; Minister for Corporate and Consumer Affairs, DTI, 1994-95; Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department, 1995-96; and Under Secretary of State for Wales, 1996-97.
He was a Parliamentary Candidate for Brecon & Radnor, General Election 1987; Wolverhampton North East, General Election 1979; and Ebbw Vale, in February and October 1974.
Jonathan was selected as the Parliamentary candidate for Cardiff North in September 2007.
About Jonathan
Born in 1950, Jonathan was educated at Lewis School, Pengam; Howardian High School, Cardiff and the College of Law, Guildford and London. He was a Solicitor and Director of Insurance for Eversheds from 1997-99 and has been a consultant to several North American insurance corporations.
Jonathan is married with three children. His interests include economic and monetary affairs, trade and industry, agriculture, NSPCC and the Welsh National Sports Centre for the Disabled.
